    Default A New Smart Car Electric Vehicle: Why, Yes. Yes, It Is.



    The Smart car brand unveiled a new-generation Smart electric vehicle at the Paris Motor Show, to go on sale in the United States in 2017, starting with the hardtop version in the spring, and a convertible in the summer.

    The new version, the 2017 Smart fortwo coupe electric drive, recharges in less than half the time of the model it replaces, although thatís still 2Ĺ hours. The company claims a range of about 99 miles on a full charge. Thatís based on European testing; the numbers could change according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards.

    Pricing for the 2017 model will be announced closer to launch, but suggested retail for the 2016 model is $25,925.

    That includes $925 destination charge, but the sticker price does not reflect substantial tax breaks including a $7,500 federal tax credit, available for buying an electric vehicle. Incidentally, smartusa.com was advertising a $139 monthly lease payment for the hardtop, or $199 for the cabriolet, through Sept. 30.


    Competitors include the Fiat 500e, the Nissan Leaf, the Volkswagen eGolf and the Mitsubishi i-MiEV.

    The first commercially available Smart EV was long in coming, considering the Smart car was conceived more than two decades ago with electric drive in mind, along with the ability to accommodate other alternative drivetrains. The Smart fortwo is close to the original concept. Parent Mercedes-Benz also offers the bigger Smart forfour, which is not available in the United States.

    A central part of the original Smart design was to put the drivetrain under the floor, so the Smart could be built in different configurations without disrupting the interior. The first Smart EVs went on sale in the U.S. market in 2013, after a long period when Smart EVs were in U.S. test fleets.

    I personally would say no no to an electric Smart Fortwo, I would rather have an electric golf buggy for the money.

    First of all does it have to have a big E on the side of the car to advertise its electric, that is just pathetic. Allso range is still very poor, and for the extra money it costs, that could be put to buying petrol (gas).

    Having read the harrowing tales of electric Fortwo buyers, having to shed load to try and get home, ie, lights off, turning off wipers, heater, etc, I can live without such a worry, of not knowing if I am going to get home in it, or be stranded at the side of the road.

    Even having to plan routes to it avoids going over hills that saps the energy out of the car, and planning to have to find a public energy point assuming that it is not vandalised).

    Here in the UK, there are very few private electric Smarts sold (on 451 models), and the majority that are sold are full of advertising on their sides of companies that are trying to show off their green credentials, and even these only run into about three hundred sold per year, compared tens of thousands of petrol or diesel Fortwos sold annually.

    Sorry, The electric car may be the future, but will need far more range from the batteries , and far quicker charging, than they have now. If I really had to go electric, I would chose a hybrid car at present which has both a fueled engine and an electric motor. And that way I know I would get home.

    Another horrible factor is that most electric cars including the Smart, has battery rental, meaning that you have to pay £49 a month (thats $66) rental forever for the cars batteries, no matter how long you own the car. Crazy! (That scheme has to go, before I would consider electric).

    2019 update.....Battery rental has now been done away with on Electric 453, rental of the batteries was a stupid idea. So now its a one off cost within the car price, and only secondhand owners or owners that hang on to the car for many years ,will have to worry about failed batteries 7 or more years down the line.
